Emmaus is an association founded in 1949 that helps people in very precarious situations and victims of exclusion so that they can once again become actors in their lives. The Emmaus Movement is a factory of social innovations and a militant front that campaigns for a fairer and environmentally friendly society through its historical activity of collecting, reusing, and reselling objects.

How can it help you?

The Emmaus Communities

The Emmaus Communities are places of welcome, life, activity, and solidarity that welcome thousands of people in precarious and excluded situations. There are 122 communities in France that are open to everyone unconditionally, including illegal immigrants. They allow people in need to live there for the time they need or want and to take control of their lives.

Social and housing initiatives

The Emmaus Movement coordinates daytime shelters and general and specialized accommodation, particularly emergency and stabilization shelters, reception centers for asylum seekers (CADA), housing and social reintegration centers (CHRS), etc. The Emmaus Movement also creates and manages social housing by financing, producing, or rehabilitating housing. In addition, the SOS Familles Emmaus organizations help families in financial difficulty by advising them on managing their family budget and providing them with repayable financial aid, free of charge and interest.

Integration through employment

The Comités d'Amis are Emmaus structures that employ people on subsidized contracts or people sentenced to community service. At the same time, the Emmaus Movement's social integration structures hire people in precarious situations as part of the product collection, sorting, and recycling activities.

Activities

  • Reuse, recycling, and upcycling activities for objects and clothing collected by the Emmaus structures
  • Agroecological initiatives: integration farms, self-sufficiency food projects, educational agriculture, short-distance sales outlets, solidarity grocery stores, cooking workshops, etc.
  • Publication of a report on the state of inadequate housing in France, allowing for subsequent advocacy work with elected officials and civil society
  • Creation of solidarity and inclusive companies to enable the employment of people in precarious situations or with difficulties in integrating into the working world
