In France, there are three types of visits that you can have with the members of your family and other relatives:

  • short visits in visiting rooms (up to 1 hour, depending on the internal regulations of the prison
  • long visits in family rooms (up to 6 hours)
  • long visits in family living units (between 6 and 72 hours)

The frequency of visits depends on the type of visit and on whether you are a condemned prisoner or awaiting trial.

For short visits, condemned prisoners may be visited at least once a week. Prisoners awaiting trial may be visited at least 3 times per week

For long visits, condemned prisoners may receive such visits at least once per trimester. The duration of the visit is determined by the distance of the visitor to the prison.

Prisoners awaiting trial may be visited under the same conditions if the judge in charge of their case allows it.
